About the Wiener Girls
The Wiener Girls is a Comical Performance Art piece by Katey Rafanello and Sydney Croskery.
The duo made their debut in 1998 by hosting their first photography show, "A Taste Sensation: 12 Well-Hung Photos by the Wiener Girls "at the Wiener's Circle Hot Dog Stand located in Chicago (years before aviator glasses, Juicy Couture's labeling on women's behinds, and American Apparel all became accepted styles in American Pop Culture). What started out as a summer hoax grew into a solid body of work as the Wiener Girls were invited to perform at the Jack Tilton Gallery in New York, and The American Pop Culture Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee. They were also asked to serve as the Master's of Ceremony at the weekly "Drunk Redneck Variety Show" at two of Chicago's most notorious "dives", the Big Horse Saloon and Pop's on Chicago. Since the initial Press Release proclaimed that the girls were "famous", all press received following that first show presumed that information as a fact. Publications such as: Bikini Magazine, D'Art International, Projector and Juxtapoz all took notice and wholeheartedly applauded the Wiener Girl message. The project went on for one year and included highlights such as their art work being stolen, receiving a lewd ransom note for its return, Cheerleading for the bowling team "Los Diablos Guapos" at their league events, taking part in Good Lookin' Magazine's "Slip and Slide Fashion Show", and getting kicked out of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago for being Art.
After an 8-year hiatus, the Wiener Girls resurfaced in 2007 to celebrate their 10-year reunion (after only 9 years) at Deitch Project's "3rd Annual Art Parade". Since then, the Wieners have been back in action, creating the historical WIENER WORKOUT Video, participating in various art events and shows, and are currently busy making a new series of photographs.
The Wiener Girls comment on female exploitation and use of sex in the media by emulating it to the utmost degree. Much like a child imitating the sexually provocative movements of a Brittany Spears video, the Wiener Girls copy what they see in the media and society around them…. but something always seems to get lost in the translation. The Wiener Girls is a satire that remarks on culture, sexism, ageism, superficiality, food, health, beauty, the art world, trends, America, and the human condition- basically anything that crosses their path is fuel in which to comment.
It's good comedy, good branding, good buns, and good fun. We hope you enjoy it.
